OVERVIEW

In all actuality practicing Yoga requires nothing more than a desire to do so. To help make your Yoga experience as enjoyable as possible though, we’ve listed a few recommendations below. We are constantly updating so check back from time to time to learn more. If you use Facebook don’t forget to check out our page, we are always posting tips and other interesting info.

CLOTHING

When it comes to choosing what to wear for class, we suggest finding a happy medium. Too much material like baggy pants and shirts and you will be unable to visually see your form while practicing. If your clothes are too tight you will be unable to move freely and it can impact your range of motion. “Yoga” pants and tops can be nice but are not necessary, the key here is to look for items that work with your body and allow you to focus on your poses.

YOGA MAT

Ahh Yoga mats, that soft thin layer of goodness you’ve probably seen a person sitting on in just about every yoga picture. Their main purpose is to provide cushioning for the knees and elbows as well as a non slip surface to keep you from sliding around while practicing. If you do not already have a Yoga mat we usually can supply one for you to use during class free of charge.

WHAT IS YOGA?

OVERVIEW

More than 5,000 years ago, the desire for greater personal freedom, health, long life, and heightened self-understanding gave birth to this system of poses and mental exercise that we call Yoga. The word Yoga means “to join together,” and it can help bring the body and mind into one harmonious experience.

SO MANY STYLES, SO LITTLE TIME

Due to the personal nature of yoga, there have been many styles developed over the ages. Though they all basically derive from the same source each style tends to have their own unique structure and flow. In the spirit of simplicity however, will try to only touch on the ones you are more likely to encounter here in our studio as well as the local area. Classes at Yoga Theorie generally run 60mins (unless noted otherwise) and are designed to allow people of all skill levels to participate. If you can breathe, you can do yoga. Just remember to pace yourself, and take breaks when needed.

ASHTANGA

Considered a physical style, you can expect to get the same calming benefits of a yoga class as well as a boost to your cardiovascular system. Classes tend to be fast paced and filled with lots of movement. Just the thing for the inner athlete in you.

BIKRAM

The basis for the “hot” yoga movement, Bikram classes usually are taught in a space with the temperature turned up higher than normal. Designed to cleanse your body from the inside out, expect to work up a sweat during these classes.

VINYASA

This is one of the more popular yoga styles and the best part is that it can be very beginner friendly. Transitions from one pose to the next are synchronized with your breathing and it goes well together with music. You will often hear it referred to as “Vinyasa Flow” in yoga circles.

HATHA

Hatha actually refers to the physical practice of yoga, though these days it’s not uncommon to see it used to describe yoga in general. Classes branded as “Hatha” are usually slow paced and very simple but can vary widely from teacher to teacher and studio to studio.
